Why Puzzles Are the One Thing Artificial Intelligence Cannot Fake
I have spent the better part of the last decade watching people solve puzzles. And now, puzzles are the only thing standing between civilization and digital chaos.

Anyone who has logged into anything recently, and I mean anything, has been asked to prove they are human. Not with a password. Not with a fingerprint. With a puzzle.
For about a decade, that meant picking out traffic lights and crosswalks from a grid of photos. Click every image that contains a bus. Drag the slider so the puzzle piece fits into the gap. Simple object recognition, and honestly, it worked for a while.
Then AI got better at recognizing objects. So the puzzles had to get better too.
Anyone who has logged into anything recently has probably noticed the shift. The prompts are not asking for bicycle identification anymore. They are showing a set of shapes and asking which ones are similar. They are asking for items to be selected in a specific order. They are stacking these challenges four or five deep, making the user prove it was not a lucky guess.
And for a puzzle designer, that progression is not surprising at all. It is familiar. Because what these security companies have built, whether they realize it or not, is the fundamental architecture of every puzzle that has ever existed. The correct answers in the correct order. That is it. That is the whole game. It is what makes a lock work, what makes an escape room work, and apparently what makes the internet work now too.
I watched a man in my escape room last Saturday take eleven minutes to open a four digit lock. That same man probably spent his morning breezing through a sequence of visual logic puzzles just to check his bank balance. He did not even realize he was doing it. That is the beautiful thing.
And if that does not make a person pause for a second, it should.
The Gap
Here is what I find fascinating. I have personally watched north of 50,000 people work through puzzles in my escape rooms. I have seen engineers fail at things children breeze through. I have seen people who swear they are terrible at puzzles casually decode a cipher while barely paying attention. Human puzzle solving is not about intelligence. It is about something weirder and more instinctive than that.
When a person looks at a grid of images and instantly knows which ones contain a crosswalk, that person is not running calculations. Not processing pixels. That person is doing something that billions of years of evolution built the human brain to do — recognize patterns in a messy, imperfect, ambiguous world.
AI is spectacular at precision. It can beat any human at chess. It can write a sonnet in the style of Shakespeare in four seconds. But show it nine images of bicycles where one of them is slightly obscured by a tree and it starts sweating.
Figuratively. Hopefully.
The security industry figured out what escape room designers have always known. The human brain is not a computer. It is something stranger and, in certain specific ways, something better.
This Is Not New
Technology evolves. That is the whole point of it. The wheel becomes the cart becomes the engine becomes the rocket. The telegraph becomes the telephone becomes the smartphone becomes whatever is next. Technology is a straight line forward, each version replacing the last, each innovation making the previous one obsolete.
Puzzles do not work that way. Puzzles do not evolve because they do not need to. The fundamental mechanic — figure this out or do not move forward — has not changed in the entire history of human existence. The medium changes. The stakes change. The mechanic does not.
And that is because puzzles are not entertainment. Not originally. Puzzles are survival tools. They are how early humans figured out what was safe to eat, how to navigate unfamiliar terrain, how to build shelter that would not collapse. Every survival problem is a puzzle, and the species that got better at solving them is the one that is still here.
Somewhere along the way, we started packaging puzzles as entertainment. Board games, riddles, crosswords, escape rooms. The most fundamental human mechanic wrapped in a fun experience. And there is nothing wrong with that. But it is worth remembering that when people walk into one of my rooms and something clicks in their brain, that feeling is not new. It is ancient. It is the same feeling their ancestors had when they figured out how to cross a river or outsmart a predator.
Fire was arguably humanity’s first great solve. Something is cold and dark and trying to kill everything. Figure it out. No instruction manual, no tutorial, no one to ask. Just a problem that needs solving and a brain wired to solve it. That is a puzzle. And solving it changed everything. It changed what people could eat, where they could live, how long they lasted. The first puzzle solution in human history was not a game. It was the difference between thriving and dying in the dark.
From there, puzzles became communication tools. Long before written language, humans needed ways to convey meaning, establish trust, and pass down knowledge. Symbols, patterns, sequences. Understanding them meant belonging to the group. Not understanding them meant standing outside of it. Every culture on every continent developed some version of this independently. Riddles in ancient Greece. Mechanical puzzles in China. Mathematical challenges in the Islamic world. Strategic games across Africa. Knot systems in South America.
Puzzles are one of the very few things that span every language, every culture, and every era of documented human existence. Almost nothing else does that. Music, maybe. Storytelling. That is a short list, and puzzles are on it.
Technology keeps sprinting forward. It has to. But puzzles just sit there, unchanged at their core, quietly being the thing that connects every civilization that has ever existed.
And now, in 2026, the most advanced technology companies on earth have arrived at the same solution that ancient civilizations used thousands of years ago.
Prove worthiness of entry. Solve this.
The medium has changed. The principle has not.
The Thing I Cannot Stop Thinking About
I stand in a control room and watch groups of strangers become teams. I watch them argue, collaborate, fail, adapt, and occasionally triumph in ways that genuinely move me after all these years. And the engine underneath all of it is puzzles.
Now I watch the rest of the world reach for that same engine, not for entertainment, but for survival. Because the machines got too smart and the only gate left is the one that requires a human mind to open.
If someone had told me ten years ago that my little industry, the one people still sometimes call party games, would be sitting on the answer to one of technology’s biggest problems, I would have laughed.
I am not laughing now. Well, that is not true. I am absolutely laughing. Because somewhere out there right now, the most sophisticated artificial intelligence ever built is staring at nine pictures of a bus and getting it wrong. And somewhere else, a twelve year old is flying through it without a second thought on her way to check TikTok.
Genuine intelligence was never about processing power. It was always about something messier, weirder, and more beautifully human than that.
The ancient world knew it. The escape room industry knows it. And for the time being, it is still something that is too real to be fake.
